Make sure you budget and actually study and not just complete the homework as "studying".

Maeve from Spring 2023

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I think that going to Chichibu with the school was the most satisfying, because we were able to get out of the classroom and apply our Japanese and be able to still learn Japanese language and culture with the teachers from KCP.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

The most productive aspect was special studies's conversation practice class. We were able to learn vocabulary and relative and applicable conversation starters and further that we never learn in the textbook and that you can actively use in everyday life. The least productive aspect of the program was the lack of structure or clearly stated plan for outings that are school run.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

The most helpful activities to facilitate better learning for me was the drill practice, pair work, small groups, and games.

Any suggestions for improving class activities or materials?

More games and more applicable learning outside of the textbook.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

Studying in a local cafe (not Starbucks or the like) or the school library is preferable to the dorm. By studying in small local cafes, it also allows you to meet Japanese natives who you can practice your spoken Japanese with, it is a much better gauge of your speaking and grammar ability than in class. From there you will know what to focus on improving in class. Make sure you budget and actually study and not just complete the homework as "studying". Try to get to know your teachers and classmates outside of class. You will have a more enriching studying experience with KCP if you do so.
